About the website

People often ask, why my website address is www.theapplicant.com. My answer is because that is who I represent—you—the applicant for patent, trademark or copyright registration. It's that simple!

Personal background

I was born in Concordia, Kansas and was a farm kid. I'm married with one daughter, who after completing a PhD in plant biology at Washington University in St. Louis, is now Director of Technology Transfer at the Boyce Thompson Institute, an independent plant research organization at Cornell University. We own farmland in Kansas and Missouri and take pride in being physically involved in some of the maintenance including chain sawing red cedars from the pastures and spraying.

Why choose me?

1. I am "brick and mortar".

2. I will work directly with you. With transactional matters such as a patent application or trademark matter, many clients will start out working with a senior member of a large firm, but may be passed off to another attorney with less experience.

3. My fees are typically more affordable.

4. I am a licensed patent attorney, Registration No. 25864. Many lawyers who focus on copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets call themselves "intellectual property" lawyers without being licensed patent attorneys.
